Question:
Can you give me information on Curves for Women?
Can you give me some information about this club. I belong to my local Y, although I don't use it very often. What are the advantages of Curves, if any? Do they provide childcare? — Debbi C. (posted on January 25, 2002)

Hi Debbi... You might wish to check previous Q&A's as many have posted
info on Curves. It is a program that uses machines to do much of the force
behind the work. You go through a 30 min. cycle of machines and
"bouncing boards" and do this 3x a wk. If I remember correctly
its $55 to join and $29.00 a month. If you are pre-op, they will not
charge you during the time you are recovering from surgery or with a dr.
note. Neat program too in that its all women. Good luck to you.

Hi! I posted a question about Curves back about a month ago. May want to
look in the archives and see if you can find it. I got a lot of great
answers. There is a lady on this site who had surgery and actually owns
several Curves locations in the South. I am sure she could answer some of
the questions you have. I have been a member for almost a year and I love
it! It is a great program and is very easy to do even if you have extra
weight on your body. It is fun and makes you want to come back for your
three times per week. Hope this helps! Amy

A system that moves you around and does the work for you will not help you.
You need to do the work if you want to get results, no matter what someone
tries to tell you.

Hi Debbi - Some curves have daycare. I joined and lost 25# in 3 months
(also did Slimfast at the same time). I really liked it but where I was a
member it was always real crowed and I felt a little weird. But I really
did enjoy it.

I went to Curves for a year. I really liked the "circuit" program
but the one I went to has lousy management and the employees were rude. The
program was fun but did not help me lose weight because it's not really
challenging. I now go to a Gold's gym and work out with a personal trainer.
He's patient and takes his time to show me correct form so I get maximum
results. It all really depends on where you feel comfortable and what your
personal goals are in fitness. Good luck on what ever journey you choose!

Hi Debbie, I just want to respond that the machines do not do the work for
you! You are doing all the work, they are hydrolic machines which prevent
muscle tearing and allow you to do as much resistance as you can tolerate
without adding weights. The harder you work the machines, the more cardio
you get and the better strengthening, you can work your way up and get to
harder levels over time. It is a very good workout, you can burn up to 600
calories depending on how vigorous a workout you can handle, and it is done
in 30 minutes. I sweat like crazy and it has done wonders for me. No Barbie
dolls either, there are women of all ages and sizes and at different levels
of fitness. I roll out of bed and go, and I have never seen anyone all
"dolled up" which is good. The only drawback is their hours, they
close between 12:30 and 3:00 during the day, not sure why. Besdies that, I
love it and look forward to going...Go check it out and decide if it is
right for you!

Hi, I just had to chime in on this one. I've benn a member of our local
Curves for quite a while(mid 2001) and now I work there. One of the best
things is that the women are of all shapes and sizes, the whole
workout, including stretching, only takes about 45 minutes! Another good
thing is that the machines in the curcuit are hydraulic, which helps you to
tone up without "bulking" up. I want to be toned, not look like a
body builder! Give it a try!

I just joined Curves and LOVE it! Like one of the other posters
mentioned...There are women of all shapes, sizes and ages. I have never
seen anyone all dolled up and clad in spandex head to toe! No guys to
impress LOL The machines DEFINITELY do NOT do the work for you! YOU do
the work! I am a fairly fit person and I think it is challenging. They
have good music and it goes by really fast and you barely know you were
even there. My club doesn't have daycare. The hours vary from club to club
due to membership numbers. Mine closes from 1-2:30, but the other one down
the road aways is open more because they have more members. You can go to
ANY Curves if you are a member. PLUS, they have incentive programs where
you can earn "Curves Bucks" which you can use to buy t-shirst,
sweats, bags, water bottles, etc. They give you 1 Curves buck for each
pound AND inch 5 lbs and 5 inches lost = $10!
They have trivia questions all the time which also earn you
bucks...contests etc. I really like it! I have 2 pre-schoolers and WISH
they had daycare, but I just try to go when hubby is home or get a
babysitter. Check it out! I have a free pass which will get you 60% off
the joinup fee. If anyone wants one...e mail me at [email protected]

If you do go don't tell them you have had surgery for weight loss otherwise
you can't do any of their contests.

The great thing about Curves, for anyone who isn't already a member, you
can try it for a week first for free! Try it before you buy it.

I joined Curves for a couple months pre-op, but I found a better place. It
is called "It Figures" it is like Curves in that it is all WOmen
and it is the circuit training, but the difference is that at "It
Figures" their machines are adjustable. So different days of the week
the tension is different so that your body doesn't get used to the same
exercises and plateau. It is much better than Curves.
