Question:
I am 7 days postop and feel very full I get my water in but dread the protein

drinks since I feel already stuffed. I can drink them but just feel even more uncomfortable. I haven't vomited or anything. Is this normal? If so how long can I expect it to last?    — Candace F. (posted on January 24, 2002)

What kind of protein are you using? How much what with how much what? Perhaps your recipe or volume needs to be tweaked a bit to fit your particular tastes & tummy.

Milk, boost, cream soup it's not the taste it's the fullness that makes it hard.

Hi Candance. I have been adding the protein powder and water and ice to a blender and making a smoothy. The secret is to add just a bit of the instant sugar free cappucino mix. It's very good. Plus you kill 2 birs with 1 stone.

You are still really swollen inside at this point. If the fullness is a problem, I would suggest really thinning down the protein you are consuming. Also, my dr recommended to stop drinking water 15 minutes before you "eat" the protein and to not drink anymore water for 30 minutes after you finish "eating." And don't forget that the liquids count toward your daily 64 oz of water unless they are caffeinated. Hope this helps. Good luck!

At 7 days post-op I couldn't handle much at all. I was lucking if I could get in a couple teaspoons of cream soup. I did ask around and was told that it is normal that early on to not be able to get everything in, even though there are alot of people who can. My doc told me not to worry about the protein for the first few weeks until all the swelling went down. I was amazed at how much more I could eat.

Oh, yeah! I forgot to mention that at this stage anything you can get down is a plus. You are probabaly not going to hit any "targets" for your protein until you are at least 6-8 weeks out. Just do the best you can and don't worry about it! (Unless you can't get ANYTHING down and then you would need to call your dr!) Good luck!
