Question:
Please tell me how to calm my nerves so I can wait for my date to get here.
My surgery is on 6/11/02, and I think I will go crazy before it gets here!!! I find myself reading this site and updating my webpage multiple times a day. I just can't wait until my surgery date, but it is so far away- 157 days to go. I could have had the surgery in March, which would be so much better, but I scheduled it in June so that I could do it on my summer vacation. Part of me wants to drop all my class for next semester so I can just get it done, but I know I need to finish school. I am just too impatient! I don't want to wait so long- I think I will go mad while I wait. I just hope that when classes start on 1/23 I will get so busy I can't think much about the surgery. Doubt it, though. Someone please tell me how to calm my nerves so I can wait it out. Thanks, guys! — Jennifer Y. (posted on January 5, 2002)

I am so glad to see that I am not alone in my anticipation though my date
is only 10 days away. I am going stir crazy with anticipation. I guess
all that we can really do is put our focus on other things because
anticipating surely isnt' going to make the time fly. I have been reading
books and surfing the net. I am a school teacher myself and so I know that
once school gets back in session, I will be busy with the usual things.
Enjoy the rest of your break, think positive thoughts and relax. Believe
me, your date will be hear soon. Hope this helps.

My surgery is in 3 days. I have been waiting many months for the day to be
here. I did my best to stay relaxed and figured when the day is here, it is
here. I was afraid if I stressed too much about it that I would develope an
ulcer cause I had one about 17 years ago. What I did do during this time
was I read ALL the Q&A's on this site 3 or 4 times a day. I wanted to
find out everything I could about this surgery. (Lap RNY) I wanted to
prepare myself as much as possible , especially issues that pop up like
plateaus and stuff like that. I also have gone to support group meetings.
They are great! If you can go to them I would advise you to go. They are
fun and you get to meet people face to face who are both pre and post op.
You need to try and relax . Educate yourself as much as possible so you
will be as prepared as possible for the post op life. If it's really
driving you crazy that much then I would suggest you see about getting your
surgery date moved up. You won't be able to concentrate on your school work
anyway if you are constantly thinking about your surgery date. SO, you have
2 choices.....#1.....relax and take this time to eduate yourself or
#2....get you date changed so you can get it over with . Good luck to you!!

I remember when I was in college, how it seemed that some semesters would
never end. I hope you're taking a fuller load of classes, which definitely
should keep you busy enough to where the time WILL fly! I don't recommend
moving your surgery date up, it will throw a monkey wrench into your
schedule more than you will know. The important thing to keep in mind is
that you're having surgery in June during your summer break so you can take
plenty of time to recoup and get adjusted to your new lifestyle without the
stress of school. Do you have time to take on a part-time job?? That will
keep your mind occupied even MORE, and I'm sure the extra $$ can't hurt!
Please hang in there! June will be here before you know it!! :)

Jennifer- You are soooooo not alone! I am still waiting for my consult
(2/14) and cannot stand the wait either. I don't even know how long it
will be until I get a surgery date. What I try to do is keep busy (which
in college, should not be hard to do!). I also do alot of things like look
at gyms that I want to join when I am able to work out better, look at
clothes I would like to buy when I lose weight, and plan little fantasy
vacations (hopefully that will come true) that I can do with my daughter
and husband. I think about things that I can do on a vacation (like
horseback riding) after I lose the weight. The waiting is still painful,
but I find this helps.

My surgery date is not until 4/23/02, I decided to start taking vitamins,
walking and trying to eat healthier so that I can be in the best shape
possible for the surgery.
