Question:
I keep reading about weight gone forever.
People on this website keeps using the term, 65 pounds gone forever, or 90 pounds gones forever, etc. Do you mean that once you loose the weight you don't gain it back. I have notice that every pound I lose I don't gain it back, but I just thought this is because I haven't eaten enough to gain weight. Please explain this to me, although this may be a stupid question. Thanks all — [Anonymous] (posted on December 3, 2001)

According to Barb Thompsons book some regain can occur esppically 7 to 10
years out. Now I figure that hopefully by that time there will be asafe and
effective diet pill out. But if there isnt I would happily have surgery
again. I heard asad story about a WLS patient a RNY who dumped. She started
SIPPING Dairy Queen all day long and regained most of the weight. You can
eat around the surgery but why would someone do this after going thru
surgery? I eat some things I shouldnt but would never do that........

My doctor told me that at 1 year postop, most people tend to gain back
about 15 to 20 pounds if they have gotten to their goal or below. sure
enough, after a year, I was well below goal (about 15 pounds) and gained
back about 13 of that. Of course, it took me over a year to gain it back
and also, I was determined to gain it back because I didn't like how I
looked so thin so that might have made a difference. All in all, I am
stable in weight right now and hope to stay that way. I don't know any RNY
or BPD/DS's that have gained back weight so that's hopeful I guess. I do
have 2 VBG friends who have gained all their weight back. Hope this
helped.

Been there, done that, bought the t-shirt, now it's too big.
Yes, you can regain the weight. The weight is not gone forever. (I cringe
when I see that in writing).
I regained 64 lbs between years 3 and 5 due to grazing and not dumping. My
body built up a tolerance to sugar the same way an alcoholic builds up the
tolerance for the alcohol.
I had to stop grazing, cleanup the food and start exercising. I did that
in 2/99. I lost the 64 lbs plus more and reached my goals. I am
maintaining now at almost 8 years post op.
I follow simple daily living rules: eat 6 times a day, protein first then
veggies, drink 80+ounces of water daily,
do not drink with meals, do not drink soda, take my supplements and
exercise. Simple...
Yes, weight will come back if the head is not right with food. I still
love to eat but pick and choose my splurges now.

I would'nt count on not gaining it back! I've talked to several people
who've all gained much of it back. Some of them all of it or most of it
back! However these people had their surgeries MANY years ago. I doubt they
were the newer RNY's. But in any case, I plan on constantly weighing myself
(at least every three days) and trying hard to keep it in check. I don't
know if I will be successful in getting to goal or keeping it off if I do.
But I don't want to be careless, as I don't think having the RNY is a
"sure bet". As people seem to say "it's a tool" and
it's a tool I want to work with not try to take advantage of. I don't think
anything is fool proof but the RNY should make it easier to keep it off if
we don't push it. ;)
