Question:
Has anyone had WLS who had irritable bowel syndrome?
If you had WLS did your bowels improve or get worse? Could you be turned down for surgery if you have irritable bowel syndrome? — [Anonymous] (posted on November 12, 2001)

I had Irritable Bowel Syndrome for over 15 years before my RNY surgery.
The IBS disappeared completely as of the day of surgery. I am now 20
months post-op and I have never experienced a recurrence. My surgeon said
that this was often a common "benefit" of RNY. IBS should never
cause you to be turned down....the surgery may actually cure it or improve
it. Good luck!

I was diagnosed with IBS in 1991 (with constant diarrhea) and my surgery
was 08/28/01 and have had only one episode (and that was in the beginning
right after my surgery). My IBS completely went away.

I had IBS in the past, it had stabilized over the last 5 years or so, but
after WLS I have a reoccurance. I go from one extreme to the other, which
is unusual since being constipated is pretty difficult after RNY. I just
have to remember to keep my stress level as low as possible, watch what I
eat and when I eat. I think it will go away again since I'm only a few
months out.

I was diagnosed with IBS and I had Open RNY 1 year ago on 11-20. Recently I
have to go frequently. I never have a problem with constipation. I try to
keep the stress level down and watch my diet.

I was diagnosed with IBS in Jan. of this year when I was so de-hydrated and
lost 30 pounds in 2 days. Prior to my surgery on Oct.31, I was taking
fiber pills daily to help the issue. I would have problems at least 2x a
week from IBS. I am now 2 weeks post op, down 19 lbs and not having any
IBS problems.
