Question:
Anyone notice that you bruse a lot easier since having surgery?
I am almost 11 months post op and doing great. The only thing is that for about the last month or two I bruse very easily. I never did before so this is strange to me.Has anyone else experienced this and what did you do to make it better? Thanks in advance! — Tonia B. (posted on November 12, 2001)

Get to your doctor and have him do a complete CBC including platelet count.
Low platelet count causes easy bruising. Also see if he can test your
platelet function. If they are not functioning properly you will bruise.
One other thing have you ever been on Prednisone? That causes onion skin
and easy bruising.

There are several reasons this could happen. Some of them are caused by
deficiencies and the other is what my surgeon told me after all my blood
work came out fine. It's because the capillaries are no longer surrounded
by a layer of protective fat and haven't had a chance to build thicker
walls. As a result, the slightest bump will cause them to bleed. I used
to go to bed and wake up with my legs covered in bruises, but I've noticed
that I don't get many now. I'm a year post open vbg

This happened to both my daughter and me in the months after our RNY
surgeries. Our surgeon told us to add extra Vitamin C to our usual daily
multivitamin...and it worked.
Don't ask me why...I'm sorry now that I didn't ask, but nevertheless, it
was the answer for us :-) Good luck!
