Question:
Looking for a Cold Cereal that is o.k. for us.
Anyone know of a cold cereal that is good for post-op. I don't like Oatmeal or any hot cereals. Thanks! — Staci P. (posted on October 29, 2001)

I'm sure there are many such as some of the Kasha's but they are dry and
tastless as sawdust. So I bought some rice crispies. I think it is only 3
grams of sugar so it's safe to eat. Then I put splenda and milk on it and
it's great!

I use either Rice Krispies or Special K. Special K has like 7 grams of
protein per serving, which is a lot for cereal. Like previous poster, I
put splenda on it with milk and it's pretty good.

I know Daniel just "dissed" my choice LOL, but I love Kashi For
Good Friends. It's an aquired taste, I guess. But it's good fiber and
protein. The Kashi Go Lean is not as tasty, but much higher in fiber and
protein. I usually buy a box of each and mix them together. I put milk
and splenda on 1/2 cup and it's yummy to me! It's also a good
"dry" snack too. I love the taste of Rice Krispies also, but
face it.. there is NO nutritional value to those puppies at all. The are
low sugar, but high on the glycemic index and will set you up for hunger
soon after. If you're going to do cereal, try to get some fiber.

I was told that I could have cold cereals as long as they sat in the milk
long enough to get a little soggy. I am assuming that is for the first 4-6
weeks when pureed foods are needed. After that, I am not sure. I would
read the labels and get something with a little nutrition.

Hi...I'm still a pre-op but know from experience that Special K gets good
and soggy pretty fast, tastes good, and has lots of good things in it
including protein. I plan to use it after surgery, too. It's also one of
those things that "sticks with you" as far as not getting hungry

I like Product 19. Stupid name, but great taste. A half a cup of cereal,
a quarter cup of milk and a packet of equal and I'm good to go!

I eat TOTAL, it's packed with vitamins and it keeps its crunch in milk for
a while, which is great, I hate soggy cereal!

HIIIII--I have a grea cereal I found out here in CA..Is called Protein
Plus, and it has 15 gr of protein in 3/4 of a cup..Its really crunchy like
a granola, in fact I eat it as a snack without milk at time. I found it a
Vons..You can order it from their web site..www.benefitnutrition.com..Its
really great, I think everyone will like it!!

Honey Bunches of Oats tastes GREAT ! Healthy and relatively low in sugar
and calories. Very filling !

Just a thought to add about the Kasi Cereals, I like GoLean also w/ a bit
of Splenda and I use SoySilk Vanilla flavored soy milk. The Good Friends by
Kashi is also great, and one more by Kashi, but it has just a bit more
sugar than the others, Kashi Crunchy...mmmm good!! Tastes like granola,
great for baking recipes requiring \"crisps\" topping. Just a
thought!

I would see if any of your frinds with kids buy Quaker oatmeal. I wouldn't
have eaten oatmeal if I was stranded on an island for a year, until I had
kids. Some of it is still gross but bannana cream tastes like bananna bread
and the cinnimon roll stuff isn't bad either. If you have a friend who buys
any ask for a packet. One spoonful won't kill you and you can always spit
it out. :o)

Special K, Wheat Chex, LIFE. Add splenda, rasberries and ff/milk, Yummy.
It's funny though, I was a huge cereal eater pre-op. Now I just don't have
much interest. Tastes fine, just don't "crave it like I use to.

I used to love Special K but it makes me dump now:(. When I want cereal I
usually eat Kellogs Complete Bran Flakes with Splenda and milk. It reminds
me of eating raisin bran but without the raisins. I seem to do better with
whole grain carbs. One thing, though, some of us (me included) have found
that eating carbs first thing in the morning causes carb craving all day.
Just something to keep in mind IF you are one of the unlucky ones that is
affected by that.

I personally use Fiber One with non fat milk. I add 1/8 cup of rasins or
some sliced strawberries to it, and I end up sharing it with my 3 year old
who LOVES it as well. (ok so he is wierd) But it works for me and it has
been my breakfast of choice for a long time now. Good Luck!

I finally starting to feel like a normal human being when I could eat Rice
Chex. In the beginning I would let it sit in skim milk to get soggy and
then eat it. Now I just make sure to chew, chew, chew! 1/2 c. Rice Chex,
enough milk to just show through, and a sprinkle of Splenda. YUM. (I
figured 1/2 dry by crunching it down to bits and measuring 1/4c.)<p>
I also found that I like it much more if I use an over sized coffee cup
instead of a cereal bowl. 1/2 c. looks pretty skimpy in a big cereal
bowl...lol.

Special K..let it get mushy if you're on soft foods/puree. A half cup dry
has 3.5 grams of protein...less than 1 gram fiber, and 2 grams sugars..i
know my surgeon cautions against too much fiber the first few months due to
difficulty digesting it. Plus..unlike rice chex, rice crispies, etc...it
has some protein. Under 6 grams sugars are usually tolerated...and true
dumping is mostly caused by sugary liquids.

My two favorites haven't made the list yet so here goes - Cracklin' Oat
Bran (Kelloggs) and Frosted mini-wheats. I do know thatthe fiber and
protein count ain't bad (around 6 and 5-7 per serving). I don't know the
sugar grams but I haven't had any problems with them so I don't worry. I
also just bought the Kashi GoLean and it is very dry tasting, but if it
gets soggy and you add some sweetener it ain't bad. Half the time I'm so
sleepy in the morning I don't care what I eat, as long as it's something.

They're hard to find, but there's a cereal called Sun Flakes that is just
like Frosted Flakes....they are sweetened with one of the sugar
substitutes.

Bran Buds are great - just cover with enough milk (silk)and let stand for a
minute or so. They are crunchy and the texture makes you feel like you are
having a "treat". Hope this helps.
