Question:
2 1/2 months out and can eat a small Wendy's Chili

Is this too much? I am scared that I have busted a staple or something. I also had lost 44 lbs in 8 weeks and feel like I should have lost more. I was 324 to start and had lap rny 8-15-01, please help ease my mind.    — Staci P. (posted on October 18, 2001)

Hi Staci... If my memory serves me right, that doesn't seem like too much to eat. Are you uncomfortable? Have you vomited? Site improvement suggestion: Why not keep samples of people's daily food intake at 1,2,3,4, etc. months? For instance, you'd click on month 2 and write in what you ate the day before (You and 50 others). That'll give people an array. I, like many, always thought I was eating too much. I learned that there were some that ate more than me and some that ate less.

I am 9 wks today and have lost 48 lbs so far. I too thought that was on the slow side, but as I research I see its pretty average. However, the chili...I have no idea how you can eat that much....I eat that at least once a week and can only eat about 1/4 of it and I am so full for the night. Everyone can eat different amounts of food at different times, Im sure your staple line is fine...but I would check with the Doctor. Do you have any pain? Are you overful when you are done eating that chili? How much in general at a average meal can you eat? Good Luck and if the weight is coming off that fast you must be doing something right keep up the great losing.....:)

I am 6 mths post op and I can eat that much no problem. I have a friend who had surgery and she eats less than me we had different surgeons. I think some of us just have bigger pouches than others. I feel like I can eat alot now if you compare to what you ate preop there is no comparison. I wouldn't worry too much. It just appears your stomach has healed which allows you to eat more than you could right after surgery.

Keep a list of what you eat and be honest. See your dr. or surgeon with what you do day by day..how your eating and exercising...keep a list.... this will help them to know what to tell you to do, to increase exercise, change some foods around or whatever. Remember everything has its chemical balance. But rule of thumb is, you won't lose unless your are burning more calories than you eat. GOOD GRIEF GIRL 20# A MONTH IS EXCELLENT.

Fast food restaurants aren't wrong in themselves. In fact, my friend said that her surgeon recommended them because it had the protein (meat & beans) and it was in a small amount. Also, it could be chewed easily. So, I don't think there's a problem with it. However, if you think you're eating more than what you should be eating, that may be a cause for concern. You should check just in case.

This is to anon > You sure are brave enough to be so cruel in the wording of your answer when you don't say who you are!! The MO take enough criticism, since when did you jump on the band wagon???? Are you so perfect? I'm tired of seeing a support site used as a place to put people down. Come on folks, we all screw up, and we all have to make WLS work for us in our own way!!!!!!!! Donna in AL

Hi Stacy. Good luck to you - you seem to be doing fine. I'm sorry, but I'm here to respond to "Anonymous" instead. Your dedication to yourself and your health by staying away from Fast Food joints is impressive. You are right, there are numerous options that would serve "us" better. I also agree that these places can be a major contributor to people not being as successful in their weight-loss journey. While I admire your "resolve", MY "resolve" was to regain (and maintain) my health; look and "be" normal in all aspects of my life (including eating); and break the chains of "food obsession". Before surgery, I was obsessed with food consumption. But what you prescribe (in my view) is an obsession with food paranoia. All you've done is trade one psychological disorder for another. "We" are not all the same. For instance, I've always had a pretty high metabolism - rare for a MO person. "Our" state of minds also vary greatly. For instance, I don't believe every MO person who tries a Hershey's Kiss to day will be swallowing whole cheesecakes next week. I know I don't think that way. Maybe this compulsive behavior of yours is also what's causing all this anger (paranoia, lack of tolerance, etc) that's bursting out of you. While I'm hopeful of your success in your weight-loss struggle, in your case, I can't help but wonder "at what expense". Good luck to you, Anonymous. Kevin

One variable is how liquid the chili is and that can vary between individual restaurant locations, and how long the food was being heated. Nationwide the hold temperature may vary also, the thicker the chili is the less you can eat. Then too some people likely chew longer than others which makes comparisons difficult. Add in varying surgeries stomas and any conclusions are ????? I understand theres no way to measure the pouches exact size and we were told that post ops worry about stretching pouches too much. I would just relax as long as your still loosing. 44 pounds sounds good, everyone looses at differing weights and plateaus are to be expected. I had one for nearly 3 weeks that just broke, I was afraid I wouldnt loose any more. Just think of how much less your eating today in comparison with pre op? So relax and be patient:)

I'm not perfect....but just between you and I...I ate the same thing! I love that Wendy's chili! I was having a problem with my energy level at around 8 wks post-op and if it wasn't for the chili and Taco Bell Pintos and Cheese I really feel I wouldn't have gotten out of bed during that time. Currently I am 17 months post-op and have lost just over 150 pounds...11 more to go to reach "ideal" according to the BMI chart.

I went and looked up the information on the small wendy's chili. It is 8 oz but like soup it is mostly liquid. I know I eat them now at 11 months out, and don't find myself over full. BUT here is the nutrition information. 210 cals 7 grams fat, 15 grams protein. So it isn't as bad as some things for you and it is better than a burger. take it easy

Hi. I love the chili from Wendy's. It is what I basically survive on. Sometimes I can eat the whole bowl and sometime's I can only eat about half. Don't know why but I'm not real worried about it. This is my safety food. When we have to be out of town and don't know where to eat, Wendy's is always my pick. Good luck to you in your weight loss. I am 5 months out and have lost 123 lbs so far.

Yeah docs eating plans vary all over the lot. I had rare porterhouse at 1 month out. Others wait 6 months?

I was allowed pureed meat at 5 weeks out and anything I wanted at 6 weeks out. It took me about 4 months to tolerate eating "solid" meats like steak or roast, or chicken breast, but I tolerated ground beef, fish& shrimp, and chicken thighs just fine after 6 weeks.
