Has anyone experienced vomit that smells like a bowel movement? A friend of mine father's underwent RNY but for a cancer related illness. He vomits around once a week but it smells like a bowel movement.    — [Anonymous] (posted on October 10, 2001)

I think your father should contact his surgeon IMMEDIATLY..it is not normal for this to happen. I believe he could have a bowel obstruction.

10/10/01 I agree with Eva, your friend's father's surgeon should be contacted IMMEDIATELY. He could have a post-op ileus or bowel blockage that is causing the stool to back up and be vomited. Also with the cancer diagnosis, there could be problems that this is a syptom of. This is not something that should be managed at home. If he can't get in to see the surgeon right away, he should go to the emergency room and get checked out. He would need to be sure to have his entire medical history, list of current meds/treatments, date of his surgery, etc so they would know how best to treat him. Encourage your friend to get her dad checked out ASAP! Good Luck.
