Question:
How long do I need to worry about possible hernias?
I am one month post-op with an open DS. My doctor has me on a 2-month lifting restriction of not more than 10 pounds. Do I need to beware of a possible hernia only during this 2 months, or for one year, or for the rest of my life? When can I go back to lifting up to 50 pounds without worrying about what it could do to me? — artistmama (posted on October 6, 2001)

About 1/3 of opens get a hernia. I think that is a kifetime hazard but its
more likely for a few months after surgery.

I just found out I have a hernia. I am 7 months post-op (open RNY) and
thought I was out of the jungle, but I guess not. My doctor said any
person, at any time, can get a hernia, but you're much more likely to get
one if you've ever had an abdominal surgery. Good luck--
