Question:
ANKLES: Post ops, did your ankles slim down?

I am a pre-op, starting weight of 287. However, I have the ankles of someone weighing double that amount! I know this is rare. Have any of my fellow "elephant ankled" friends lost weight to the point of having normal sized ankles?    — Julie S. (posted on September 28, 2001)

Hi Julie! I am about 6 months post-op with a starting weight of 380lbs. My ankles and the bottom of my legs were huge before surgery. They were also very sore. I now weigh 260lbs and my ankles are almost normal. I take 1 diuretic a day to keep the fluid down. I believe that your ankles will go down as you lose. Good Luck!

Yes, my ankles have thinned out. Also my shoe size went back to a 10 from an 11 that it was the last few yrs.

Mine sure did! I lost a whole width size in my shoe. I went from and xtra wide to just a wide.

Even at 253 pounds and 4'11" tall, my ankles and wrists were smaller than a lot of "normal" people. My goodness, you wouldn't believe how much I've lost from both places, but particularly my ankles. I can see bones, veins and even large tendons. My ankles are so small now, that I simply CANNOT find an ankle bracelet small enough to fit. Most are an inch and a half to two inches too large. My ankles are just about 5 1/2" now. It's just incredible how much your ankles lose. And I still have about 27 pounds to goal weight (hope I don't lose more in my ankles, though). Good luck.

I started out at 283 pounds with huge ankles and feet and even up my legs. Now at 247 my legs and ankles are down to normal and there is no more swelling in my legs . I even lost a whole shoe size.

Hi, Julie... I'm 7 weeks post-op, -40 lbs, and my ankles ALREADY look better.

Well, shoot. Am I the only one here who still has "piano legs"? My ankles are still thick, so that cute little sandals with heels look silly. I will be having a leg lift soon and asked the surgeon if he could do anything about the lower leg. He just shook his head sadly. :((

Ha ha ha....that is funny. I come from a family of women who have "thick" "tree stump" legs. Even the thin ones! None of us will every have to worry about insuring our gams. At 350lbs. I had thick ankes and big calves. I lost 150lbs. and while the shape of my legs didn't change, they did slim down...like the rest of my body. I don't have nice shapely legs. But, they are in proportion to my body. The good news is that my thighs did slim down quite nicely and I don't have any significant problems with excess skin or cellulite. My thighs don't look any worse than any other fifty year old woman's. I even wore a tank bathing suit this summer. And I looked pretty good for an "old broad".

I have larger than normal ankles and calves. Always have. I have lost some inches from them, but they are still larger than most people my size. I can wear "normal" sized clothes, but unfortunately cannot find a pair of boots that will zip up (not even the ankle kind). *sigh* And I was really looking forward to that. I hear that the shape of your legs has more to do with heredity than with anything you do to shape them. You will lose the fat from them, but it won't do anything for the SHAPE. :(
