Why do people think this surgery is so risky?

I'm serious about having this surgery, but everyone is acting like it is some risky, reckless act of immaturity -- that I can't accept myself for who I am and that I'd be 'using' the surgery just to superficially fill a gap my self esteem. Are they nuts? Or am I?
