Do insurances require you to be on a diet first? My doc put me on a diet for this.

My doc actually sent me to a diabetic clinic (a new addition to my obesity problem, I'm now a newly diagnosed diabetic). Anyhoo, my doc said that insurances require you to be on a diet for the last 6 mos. It's been about 8 since my last of many diets. Is this true? Have any of you been able to get this surgery without having a more recent diet history?
