Has anyone tried Rogaine to speed up hair regrowth?

My dermatologist recommended that I try Rogaine to speed up the "wake up" process to get my hair to come back faster. He said that since my hair loss is due to major surgery, I'll only need to use it for about four months and I wont be dependent on it. I'm worried about some of the possible side effects especially the one about unwanted weight gain. Has anyone used Rogaine? Did it cause a slow down in your weight loss? What about facial hair? Does it really make the hair come back faster and is it worth using? Thanks! By the way, I'm down 104 pounds since August 15th.
