What are my chances of something going wrong after surgery?

Lately, I have been hearing horror stories about people dying due to having the surgery, or getting an infection and kaiser not wanting to take care of the patient and people gaining all their weight back plus more. I'm getting cold feet. I should be hearing from San Diego in the next couple of months. Can anyone help me?
