Question: Would you like to meet others like yourself who want weight loss surgery?

I see a lot of people asking questions regarding hearing from other people for their experiences when it comes to types of procedures, how much intestine should or should not be bypassed, insurance companies, vitamin needs, what foods to eat, lap or open, etc. Well I don't know if you some of you are aware but there are mailing lists out there for people who want weight loss surgery. Some do produce a lot of mail but there are smaller lists available that don't produce as much so people that don't have the time can cope better with the volume. There's an incredible amount of information on this site and I am not trying to deduct from that but some people need more one to one info instead of sending out questions here. So if you will please read the info below, you will find other great places that give incredible info from pre and post-ops. The mailing lists can be found at www.onelist.com - you can either go searching on your own, by going there and entering things like "weight loss surgery", "gastric bypass", "RNY", "WLS" etc or you can have a look at the following list names. I can't give you info on every list but once I give you the description of some, you will be able to look at the names of others and see what they may be about. Also, at www.onelist.com it gives a detailed description of each one as well as how to subscribe. OSSG - - Obesity Surgery Support Group - (my personal favourite) OSSGnomod - an unmoderated version of the above list OSSG-NYC-METRO -- For those in the NYC area OssgPRAYER -- Weight loss surgery and Christian issues Weightloss-emotional - It deals with the emotional aspect of losing weight after weight loss surgery WLS400plus - For those starting out at 400+ lbs. Ossg-recipes - A recipe list Ossgfriends -- A list created for off topic posts for people on any form of an OSSG mailing list. (Jokes, survey's, etc) Now that you see those above, you can see how the list names work. The following are as many weight loss surgery mailing lists I can find. If you need anything or just want to chat, feel free to write me. If you are interested in having weight loss surgery, be sure and do your research and find out information for yourself. Make educated decisions and if you have any serious doubts, don't go ahead with the surgery. You must make sure this is something you need and want. And please, don't take one bad experience as the end all be all on this topic. I'm sure there will be those very quick to tell you they know of someone who had the op done and had severe complications, gained all their weight back, or even died. But then... I know someone who went in for a routine filling and because of complications afterwards, had half their jaw removed. Doesn't mean having a filling is seriously dangerous and you shouldn't have it done if it is desperately needed. Procedures have changed a lot in the past ten/twenty years. I have met hundreds of people who not only have NOT had a bad experience, but they actually refer to this operation as a miracle (for them). It wasn't a cure, but it helped them have a normal life. Yes, there are risks of complications, just as there are from any operation. You cannot have this operation and think you will be able to pig out or binge. There are basic things you will find out along the way that you must follow. The surgery does *not* mean you're going to lose weight and never have to worry about food or weight again. But if you do decide it is what you want, you won't be alone. There are nearly 2 thousand people alone on OSSG in particular. And throughout the others, there are hundreds, if not thousands more. Just a note though - I can't vouch for all of the lists - just the ones I belong to - but they are much more than just where people gather to chat about it. There are people who have come up with extremely informative web sites, listing links all over the net, there are FAQ's for things such as questions to ask your surgeon, detailed info on different forms of weight loss surgery, etc. No one will claim to know it all. We can only offer support and suggestions, but at the end of the day, it comes down to you, and if you have it done, then it comes down to you and your surgeon. All the best and remember, if you need anything, just ask. I will more than happy to help you find what you are looking for or just lend an ear. Hope this helps.
