Did you ever hear of not knowing if your insurance has accepted your claim ?

The girls in the Dr.'s office said that i will not fing out if my insurance has accepted my claim until a week before my surgery date. They said this is something new. I don't think they meant my specific type of insurance because they were telling this to everyone. Has anyone ever heard of this?
