What determines LAP or OPEN??

Hi, I have a high BMI of 58, 5'4 330 lbs. I am scheduled for LAP RNY at the end of the month, but have heard from some that with my BMI being over 50 that LAP is out of the question. I went to see my Surgeon, and he seems to think I would be ok for LAP, but he didn't examine me thoroughly , it was my first intial consult and it was just a question answer kind of appointment. I tend to carry most of my weight in my butt , hips and legs. Does BMI determine whether or not LAP is an option? Or is it the shape of your body and whether or not you carry a lot of weight in the stomach area? Thanks for any responses!
