What does it mean when liver enzymes are rising?

I talked to my doctor yesterday and was told that my liver enzymes are getting higher and need to see a specialist.I don't know what this means.He said since my surgery in March they have continued to rise.Before surgery I was told I had a fatty liver whatever that means.Any info would be greatly appreciated..Thanks
