I was been previously diagnosed w/a hiatal hernia, will that need to be fixed first?

I am still on the fence about the surgery-I have a friend who had it done 1 1/2 years ago and has already had a baby. I'd like to know if the hiatal hernia would need to be done first or if it could be taken care of during?
