why am i coughing up this yellow bitter mucus & its burning my throat bad

I am 9 mos post op and for the first time I've woken up coughing up yellow mucus. It's the most bitter stuff I've ever tasted and it's burning my throat terribly. I took my prevecid and I'm eatting a sf fudgsickle but it still burns and tastes horrible. What's going on?
