Pain meds for cronic pain after surgery?

I take pain med for cronic pain and I'm wondering how I will still be able to take them right after surgery. I am dependent on them and the thought of not taking them for a while after surgery is something that I don't find appealing, call me nuts. Has anyone else had to deal with this problem?
