Can a person get another hernia after the repair if they lose 50 more pounds?

My hernia is about 2 1/2 inches in diameter. The doctor told me he would do the surgery now since the hernia is large and is bothering me. The person who called me to schedule my surgery said that if I have the repair done and lose 50 more pounds, that I will take a chance of getting another hernia. I don't understand how when the doctor is going to use mesh. I am really confused now. The hernia really bothers me. I think it causes bowel problems and hurts and stays sticking out most of the time. The only time it goes in is when I lay flat on my back and I push it in. I would appreciate any advice.
