how long before I would be able to sleep on a futon that is close to the floor?

I sleep on a futon now and i am going home to recuperate, so I would not have to deal with it for at least a month. I am trying not to have to buy a bed because of the expense and for the fact that I love my futon, but... I would appreciate any information! I go for surgery on July 19th and my doctor is Dr. Paul Lin in Wash, DC
