how do you pick a surgeon and know they are part of insurance

I have already had a surgeon consult, now I'm realizing my surgeon does not transect the stomach and I am worried about staple line disrution later on. I knew my medical group had already referred patients to this surgeon, I did not know I was able to go anywhere else. I don't know anything about changing surgeon's and how they are approved. It's my medical group who approves the surgery, so I guess the surgeon has to contract with them????? But I'd really like to see someone else, this process is taking forever.....
