How long will it take for my hair to grow back?

I am african american and I have lost a ton of hair. I am just curious as to how long it will take for my hair to grow back. I have a bald spot in the top of my head about the size of a grapefruit. Before the surgery I had very long and thick hair. Will it grow back?
