Updating Profile how

How do I update my profile? When I tried to do it today it erased what I had and just put the new stuff. Do I just tag it on to the end or what? What I did today was erase what had been there before and put the new info thinking it would add it to the end. Obviously NOT the right think to do. Any help would be appreciated.
