Is it mormal to have two visits w/ surgeon b/4 being approved from ins?

I had my first visit w/ my surgeon back in oct. but due to psych. hold I had to wait until my psych. released me to b able to have surgery he released me to have surgery on march 5 2003,and my info was sent to my ins. last week (no word yet on approval)anyway the surgeon wants to see me again next week i am going but I havent heard anyone else having to do this ....Is this pretty much normal proceedure? any help would b appreciated...Thanx
