Can second hand smoke hinder surgery?

I am a non Smoker. How do you handle those who smoke around you. I am a non - smoker and live in a non - smoking environment. BUT i work with smokers. They are good not to smoke in my "area" but it makes me cough. I don't want to hurt anyone and they are all good people Will this be a bad factor for surgery?
