Is there anyway that we can prevent a hernia

I am still pre-op(surgery date is Sept.26)and I read the Q&A almost daily. I hear different things of and on about hernias. Some hurt some don't. I would like to avoid all together. Is there a way to prevent them? I guess I am getting a little anxious. So I'd appreciate all the information I can get. Thanks
