Can some of you share your experiences with pre-existing clauses?

I know the general pre-existing guidelines regarding HIPPA and the wait period required before receving treatment for pre-exisiting conditions but wanted to hear experiences some of you have had who have been in my situation. I have not had insurance for several years but got insured in July. In September I was eligible for an insurance with no exlusions and have been signed with them ever since. I already have seen a surgeon and am awaiting approval. The problem is I just began to understand how "pre-existing" conditions may effect my approval. Have any of you dealt with this? How did your insurance handle this? Did they ask for a letter from your last insurance? What about if you never had insurance before, is there an automatic waiting period? If there was a waiting period would they approve you but make you wait? I'm sorry for all the questions but I really need this surgery and I'm afraid I won't get it or thatthey may add an exlusion by the time I'm eligible. Please help!
