How do you keep your energy while working out?

Hi! I'm 7 months post-op lap RNY. I've always been active but have now started taking water aerobics 3x per week. Halfway into the workout I am starving! Tried having dinner before going. Tried eating 1/2 a protien bar before. That helped a bit, but then I was starving at end. What does everyone do to maintain their energy? I didn't get so much tired as just felt, well, famished. Help! I don't want to exercise and eat all the calories I'm burning! I average about 1200 calories a day, at the low end of my doctor's recommendation (1200-1600), and have lost 84 lbs.
