How long after surgery does the anesthesia affect you?

When I return home from my surgery I will need to climb a short flight of stairs to get to my room. It's about 7 steps. Will I be so "out of it" that I will need help to get up there? Also, how long after surgery did it take before you felt like getting out into the world again? I know everyone is different, but I just wanted to see what people think! Thanks! :o)
