How long does hair loss usually last?

I am taking my hair vitamins, but so far the hair loss keeps on keeping on, like by the handfuls. Luckily have have lots of hair, but i would prefer to keep most of it. And does anyone know if shorter hair looks better on going bald women??? Right now my hair is shoulder length!
