When your stomach is empty do you burp more often?

I am 4 weeks post-op and have recently had more gas than before. Since surgery it has been bad but has got increasingly worse the last week. I seem to always be burping and have noticed the burping is even more often and severe when I haven't eaten anything. Has anyone had issues with this? I have wondered if I am accidently gulping air throughout the day, it is really getting annoying not to mention a bit painful. Thanks for the help. Cindy
