How long does Magnesium citrate continue to work after you have taken it?

My reason for this question is that I am to take the prep around 6pm the night before surgery, but hubby is flying in to be with me and his plane arrives at 7:30p.m., and if I still need to be by the toilet, I will need to find someone to pick him up or have him take a cab to the hotel. Thanks!
