Is there anything I can do before surgery to help myself after?

I have been told by my PCP that I have been referred for surgery. I was wondering if there is anything I can do personally to help myself after surgery. I don't have a lot of money, so could I be shopping for things I will need like vitamins, liquid diet drinks, water etc. what ever, I have no idea what I'll need. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
