Has anyone had a problem qualifying for surgery due to a hiatal hernia?

I was told I have a hiatal hernia and if it is too big the Dr. won't do surgery has anyone else come across this problem? And if so how do I fix it. This surgery has cost me a lot of time, money, and nervs to be told over the phone as I was trying to schedule a surgery date(did all other pre-certs)that it might not happen.
