Sustained Release?

I've read here recently that sustained release meds will not work for rny patients. Is this true, and if so why? I started on Wellbutrin, which I had to take 3 times a day. Needless to say I usually ended up taking only 1-2 day because I would forget. So I switched to the SR and it seems to be working. Should I be concerned?
