In what form do you take calcium? pill, liquid,wafer????

I am very confused only by the calcium. I have read that we should take calcium citrate and that magnesium and vitamin D will help to absorb better. I just don't understand how you can swallow a pill or 4 after surgery. What exact calcium do people take and in what form?
