What are the symptoms of a leak?

My friend had DS surgery on Wednesday. On Thursday, she had a fever. By Friday, she was moving her bowels uncontrollably and there was a lot of blood, (Thus far they have given her 7 pints of blood). Saturday night she had to go for another surgery to repair the connection between the stomach and the intestine. Are these the typical symptoms of a leak? Couldn't the doctor have figured this out before she lost so much blood? SHe would appreciate hearing of your experiences. Ill pass them on to her as she is in SICU. Thanks!
