What is barrett's esophogus?

I had a consult with my gastro doctor this afternoon. He said that I may have the onset of Barrett's Esophogus. At first he asked if I would be interested in surgery for it. When I told his that I was going for WLS on August 21, he said that that would be sufficient. Anyone have Barretts? Did it improve post? Any information would be helpful!
