Weight loss before surgery

My doctor wants me to lose 20-30lbs before he will preform the surgery. Is this normal? He put me on the atkins diet, but what I am afraid of is that once I do lose the weight he will refuse to do the surgery because I lost the weight on my own. I mean, if it was easy for me to lose weight I wouldn't need the surgery right?
