Is it normal to hurt whne u swallow

My question is it normal to not be able to swallow without it being painful. I had my surgery on 3/26/10 and have followed the liquid diet pretty much I have tried some mashed potatoes and some cream of potato soup that was pureed I am having a feeling like I need to burp and can;t if that makes any sense can someone [ease help me out I am worried.
