How do you handle "not telling" people? Or telling those who are opposed to the surg

I was highly encouraged to tell my coworkers since they would notice my absence. I am a pretty private person but on my last day of work I told them. That didn't give them much time to make negative comments. I still have to tell my son, who is opposed. His exwife had the surgery and it was a bad experience for him.
