Caloried counting?

I was told not to count calories or gm of sugar but to ONLY WATCH MY PROTEIN and to make sure i get 50gm per day... I feel as thought calorie intake should me monitored also but i dont know the calorie range i should be shooting for... Dec 4 i am released to work out and up until all i could do is walk. Is it true that i still have to burn more than i eat to lose weight? even post op?
