How to post an avatar picture?

I want to put a picture of myself as my avatar but when downloading from my computer files, it states that the pictures are too big or in wrong form. I have scanned smaller prints and edited the picture to littler sizes but can't figure it out. Anyone know an easy way. Thanks Marsha
