Is it possible to change ins. companies if your insurance co. does not cover WLS?

The insurance that I have through my job has a written exclusion for WLS. Rather than self-pay, could I not pick up another insurance privately? I called BC/BS and they told me that 1). they would probably deny me private coverage as I am MO and 2). even if they did pick me up, they would not cover my WLS because it would be considered a pre-existing condition. Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
