Should I have a pelvic exam done by either my PCP or Gynecologist?

This is embarrassing, but I suspect that I may have a vaginal infection. Shouldn't I get this taken care of now and not wait until surgery time? I just do not like to have pelvic exams, but don't want any problems complications which may be related to "female stuff"...
