Should my husband stay overnight with me at the hospital the night of surgery?

I feel like I would really like the security of having my husband spend that first night in the room with me. He would like to be there as well. I feel safest when I'm with him. I'm not sure this is allowed, I'm sure I can find out from the hospital. Did anyone else have have their spouse or another person stay with them? Was it helpful? Did the hospital provide a cot and offer meals? I'd be interested to hear how it went.
